I gang,
I picked up a SW 40+ with a keyer and nice reduction drive for the cost of
the kit.
I understand it was built by Chuck Adams.
RX is fine and I had a solid copy on N0UR calling CQ.QRP
I cannot check the power because I don't have the BNC to SO-239 adapter but
I did use a 50 ohm resistor, the long one that looks like it's made of sand
stone,rated at 10 watts.
It did get warm after a 2 minute key down so i'm sure the TX is fine.
My real concern is I can hear the CW note on the FT 897-D but as I tune down
I hear just a hash but it get more quite as I tune down and is still there
at the bottom of the band
10-KC either side of the frequency I can hear key clicks on the 897 even
with the CW filter kicked in.
I did the same test with the MFJ 20 meter rig and it was clean.
I have no papers so can someone point me in the direction where to look?
Thanks
BOB

nice acquisition. while your comparative test does sound scientific, at close range things can go wrong with testing. given its apparent overall health, a QSO with a strong station may get you a clean report. the key clicks may be emphasized by the close range, and you might merely be hearing they are noticeably more than the other rig, but still exceptable to distant listeners?
i would not rule out the keyer chip as the source of the noise, but I am grabbing at straws on this one.
documentation should be available at smallwonderlabs.com
as for K7QO building it, you can always ask him!

I assume this is one of the rigs I sold at Williams AZ. I sold everything
but one SWL-40+ and the TenTec1340. :-)
You can get the entire manual from
http://www.smallwonderlabs.com/
When I sold the rig at Williams I did include the manual with it.
That is one of the problems with some hams and it bothers me to
no end. Good thing that Dave keeps the manuals online. Every
manufacturer of QRP kits should have their manuals online just
for this reason. Used rigs are missing manuals.
I have to write up a tutorial on keying and clicks. What keyer
are you using?
Also, all my rigs are most likely at 0.95W out into a 50ohm load.
I like QRPp.
FYI
chuck
P.S. Is there really really a need to post to two groups?

The reason I has so much trouble trying to get this rig working was because
the rig came with bo papers.
The ebay ad said it was a SW 40-+
Well it turns out the rig is a SW 20-+
This person is a ham and says he had it on the air
Still peaking and tweaking and have 2.8 watts going into a 20 meter base
coil loaded antenna but the final sure gets hot

Don't use these wire wound resistors as dummy loads since the coil of
wire will cause some inductance and won't show a 50 Ohm impedance except
at DC.
